Adoption Policy
Our promise: Every litter at Rat Wrangler Sanctuary is carefully planned to ensure the best outcome possible. Rats are handled daily, and are introduced to other rats, different situations and various foods to make them as friendly and well-adjusted as possible. We will gladly take back any of our rats if they do not meet expectations.
A small adoption fee of $10 goes towards the cost of housing and caring for our rats. Any rats adopted from Rat Wrangler Sanctuary are to be kept as pets only and not to be bred from without our written consent. If circumstances change, and you are no longer able to care for the rats, RWS is to be notified and allowed to take back any and all rats adopted to you at no cost. If any of the adopted rats develop health issues, RWS is to be notified as soon as possible so that we can take this into consideration when continuing breeding from our lines. We endevour to ensure all rats adopted out are fit and healthy, thus RWS is not responsible for any health issues arising after adoption. We are happy to re-adopt any rats that develop illnesses however if you are unwilling or unable to care for them.
The adopter agrees to:
-
Provide the rats with adequate housing, including suitable bedding (aspen, breeders select or similar, NOT pine shavings) and a large ventilated cage. The rats must not be kept outside or in a drafty environment. Cages must also be cleaned regularly to provide the rats with sanitary living conditions.
-
Provide suitable food, in the form of a lab block plus fresh food supplements, in sufficient quantity daily.
-
Provide the company of at least one other rat of the same sex for their entire life, unless their companion dies and they refuse to have another companion or they are too old for this to be feasible.
-
Provide vet care when needed.
-
Notify RWS if any serious health problems arise, so that other adopters can be warned of potential problems and it can be taken into account for future breeding.
-
Not breed from any adopted rats without written consent from RWS. If accidental breeding should occur, RWS must be notified as soon as possible. It is essential to keep track of bloodlines to prevent inbreeding at a later stage.
Failure to follow the adoption policy will result in the rats being demanded back at cost to the owner.
